Open Source SLR Camera (vision)

Lóránd Somogyi

I have a vision. On the analogy of cellular phones, it would be cool to have programmable digital SLR cameras.

Now-a-days almost each cellular phone could be programmed. Most of them are programmable with J2ME and some have their own OS/SDK. That’s why there are lots of 3rd party software for it. Games, tools, all kind of application.

Now take the same idea and put it into a digital SLR. The API would provide  us with lens information, metering data and even with actual pixels on the fly. Okay, it does not have to be an SLR, it could be any kind of digital camera, or even video cam. I guess those APIs are already there, we just do not have access to it. And probably there is not enough space on the device, but those are really minor issues. More powerful CPUs and bigger memories are affordable. Just as with phones.

Providing those extra hardware and publishing APIs, libs, SDKs under Open Source would be a real boom. Just imagine, we could write a software which takes multi-focus shots, just like with bracketing, but this time changing focal length of the lens. That how we could make an extra deep image. Or we could write different kinds of metering methods, or just make a motion triggered cam. There are endless posibilities…

I guess that the whoever first provides these features will gain huge advantage over the others.

Poland (last tale)

Lóránd Somogyi

(previous tales could be found here and here)

Hel ls-pol08-040.jpg

While we were at Gdańsk we mad an excursion with our friends to a peninsula called Hel. A popular touristic place, with hawkers, restaurants, water sport possibilities.

We had a (not so cheap) seafood meal there, which I could not remember, – so I guess it was not that good. Continue reading

Poland

Lóránd Somogyi

(Travel Story in 3 Tales)

Poland. A land of bitter diversities, nice hospitality, good food and polite people.

ls-pol08-022.jpgI would never thought…, or to be more precise: I assumed a totally different picture. I thought it will be a country of man with mustaches, cheap shops, bad roads and strange food. I was wrong. I just might be right with few assumptions, if we were talking about Poland before 10 or 20 years. But nowadays, Poland is something really pleasant. Continue reading

Bibble 5 Preview arrived…

Lóránd Somogyi

A bit under communicated, but Bibble 5 Preview 1 arrived. Hidden deeply in the forum of Bibble you could find the announcement, but only if you are a registered forum user.

You could google for a long time before you would found it. If you check the main page of BibbleLabs, no info there. No info on Bibble 5 dedictated page at this time. No newsletter. You just have to be eager, to have it. :-)

But from the forum there is a link to a page which points to a preview. There you could request for a trial.

They state that you could get a trial for 3 month if you have Bibble 4 license. I have a license but I faid to get a 3 month trial.

So now I’m going to try the preview…

Lóránd Somogyi
There is an update to this post here

Well january past by, it’s about 4am February the 1st in Austin, TX and there is still no Bibble 5. And no information about it. The latest news was that we are going to see a public preview of Bibble 5 no later than January the 31th.

As a software developer and architect I know how hard is to deliver a software on time, packaged, etc.. There are different thoughts that flash into my mind: Continue reading
